How do you cultivate compassion without becoming a doormat?

I’d like to become more helpful to people but at the same time I know that there are people around who would take advantage of someones willingness to try to be kind to everyone. If someone gets the idea they can get away with just anything, it can cause them (and their friends, family, co-workers and neighbors) all sorts of trouble. Compassion would require that you not enable that situation. But you can go wild with such courtesies as holding the door for someone carrying packages, letting waiting drivers into the stream of traffic, picking up things people dropped and returning it to them, or just paying attention. You will still get cheated occasionally, but it will be so worth it!
