Yoga in Practice

Yoga in Practice

$27.95

Yoga is a body of practice that spans two millennia and transcends the boundaries of any single religion, geographic region, or teaching lineage. In fact, over the centuries there have been many “yogas”–yogas of battlefield warriors, of itinerant minstrels and beggars, of religious reformers, and of course, the yogas of mind and body so popular today. Yoga in Practice is an anthology of primary texts drawn from the diverse yoga traditions of India, greater Asia, and the West. This one-of-a-kind sourcebook features elegant translations of Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and even Islamic yogic writings, many of them being made available in English for the very first time. Collected here are ancient, colonial, and modern texts reflecting a broad range of genres, from an early medical treatise in Sanskrit to Upanishadic verses on sacred sounds; from a Tibetan catechetical dialogue to funerary and devotional songs still sung in India today; and from a 1930s instructional guide by the grandfather of contemporary yoga to the private papers of a pioneer of tantric yoga in America. Emphasizing the lived experiences to be found in the many worlds of yoga, Yoga in Practice includes David Gordon White’s informative general introduction as well as concise introductions to each reading by the book’s contributors.

Yoga

Yoga

$25

Yoga Mind and Body has garnered much praise from senior Sivananda yoga teachers worldwide, and this new book retains all the features that made the existing book so successful clear instructions on each pose demonstrated step by step, common mistakes shown and explained, and a list of the physical and mental benefits of each pose together with a fresh, new design; beautiful specially commissioned step-by-step photography of the yoga poses; and a number of added features to make the book even more accessible and user-friendly. A new chapter on The Many Benefits of Yoga gives a fascinating and valuable overview of the ways that yoga can maintain or restore the health of the body. With the help of specially commissioned anatomical drawings, it explains how yoga poses work on and benefit the body, including their effect on different types of muscle and the connective tissue (the vast network of elastic tissue that encloses and connects muscles and organs); how poses can help to stimulate our hormonal system; the vital role they play in calming the nervous system, helping you to relax and deal with stress; and the powerful effect yoga has in oxygenating the whole body, and especially the brain, which needs plentiful supplies of oxygen to function properly. In the chapter Proper Exercise, the yoga poses are arranged in the order you should practice them in, and poses are clearly labeled beginner, intermediate, or advanced, helping the reader to progress at his or her own pace. At the end of the book, in another new feature that yoga students will welcome, there are specially devised programs of yoga poses for beginners, intermediate, and advanced students of 20, 40 and 60 minutes each. The chapters on Yogic Breathing and on Positive Thinking and Meditation provide detailed advice on breathing techniques and on how to meditate. The Vegetarian Diet chapter has also been rewritten, and now includes a helpful transition eating plan to becoming vegetarian. The chapter also includes over 40 wholesome and delicious all-new vegetarian recipes.

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga

$15.95

How to balance Yoga practice. As Yoga matures in the U.S., this is a new approach to balance physical and mental health, for serious students and beginners. All yoga forms emphasizing either muscle (Yang) or connective (Yin) tissue. Today, all popular Yoga forms are Yang–muscular. Yin Yoga is unknown, but vital, as a balanced Yoga practice has many benefits, including better preparation for meditation. Yin Yoga focuses upon connective tissue, which does not stretch or respond to brief stresses as muscle will, so Yin postures are held a long time, with the muscles relaxed. Acupuncture meridians are also in connective tissues and Yin Yoga is specifically designed to stimulate them.

Mindfulness Yoga

Mindfulness Yoga

$19.95

This groundbreaking book introduces an entirely new form of yoga, Mindfulness Yoga, which seamlessly integrates the Buddha's teachings on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness with traditional asana yoga practice. Mindfulness Yoga emphasizes the spiritual side of yoga practice, an aspect often overlooked in a culture that tends to fixate solely on the physical benefits of yoga. Unlike any other Buddhism-meets-yoga book, Mindfulness Yoga presents the two disciplines as a single practice that brings health to the body and liberates the mind and spirit, awakening compassion and fostering equanimity and joy. Author Frank Jude Boccio offers a superb and lively introduction to the Buddha's teachings and locates them within the larger context of the Indian spiritual traditions, then offers three complete Mindfulness Yoga sequences, including over 100 pictures, with detailed guidance for body, breath, and mind. Special lay-flat binding makes this book even more useful as a practice aid.

Myths of the Asanas

Myths of the Asanas

$9.95

Millions of yoga students around the world attend class regularly to reap the physical benefits of yoga, assuming the different poses and frequently calling them by their sanskrit names. While many probably know that hanumanasa is named for the Hindu deity Hanuman, fewer know why this is the case. Behind each asana and its corresponding movements is an ancient story about a god, a sage, or sacred animal, much like Aesop's fables or European folktales. Myths of the Asanas is the first book to compile and re-tell these ancient stories. The myths of yoga’s spiritual tradition have the power to bring about a change of heart, helping readers and students realize their full potential. Meditating on the tolerance of trees while standing in tree pose can help one become more tolerant. Learning how the disfigured sage Astavakra came to be the teacher of a king can liberate us from our anxieties about external appearance and our self-imposed limitations. Marveling at the devotion of Hanuman to his lord Rama can serve as a source of spiritual strength and determination. Through discovering mythic tales such as these in Myths of the Asanas , readers will add a new dimension to their practice and study of yoga. As Eknath Easwaran, the founder of passage meditation, put it, “yogic myth has a genius to clothe the infinite in human form.”.

Sensual, erotic, and guaranteed to improve sexual performance, the poses are also designed to improve one's ability to navigate both the physical and emotional demands of intimacy. Rooted in the rich tradition of yoga but far from an esoteric Indian practice, the program in this book is suitable for everyone from new students to experienced yoga practitioners.

Shadow Yoga, Chaya Yoga

Shadow Yoga, Chaya Yoga

$18.95

In Shadow Yoga, Chaya Yoga, author Shandor Remete shows how to utilize yoga to enhance all aspects of physical and spiritual health. Focusing specifically on the hatha tradition, the book delves deep into original Sanskrit texts, explaining the theoretical foundation of yoga in clear, encouraging language. Remete describes the "shadows" noted by classical yoga teachers that block the student, and shows ways to move beyond them. The book covers the key concepts of traditional yoga—the marmas, chakras, vayus (sources of energy), and nadis (flows of energy through the body)—before turning to the yogic techniques that improve their condition and functioning—asana (poses), nauli (abdominal exercises), pranayama (breathing), mudra (gestures), and laya (absorptions). It closes with illustrated sequences of the most important asanas. Shadow Yoga also discusses various little-understood, oft-neglected aspects of yogic training, such as the role of marma points (acupuncture-like energy points) and the influence of the zodiac. Detailed drawings of the body’s energy system and its links to these elemental and planetary forces provide a visual guide to these largely unknown areas of yoga. This knowledge, considered essential in Indian yogic traditions, has been almost entirely lost in modern Western schools of yoga. Author Remete restores that information in this beautifully designed book. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Meditation For Beginners… Methods Of Meditation

Methods of Meditation… Meditation For Beginners

Meditate on a lone cloud on a hill, floating effortlessly through space and time. Imagine you are that cloud and with every inhale and exhale, you are blowing yourself gracefully across the heavens, forgetting all sorrow, pain and worry of the hills below…

The art of meditation takes many forms and titles. Meditation has been practiced for over 5,000 years mainly in eastern religious traditions such as Buddhism and Hinduism. Other religions that have used forms of meditation include Janism, Sikhism, New Age, Taoism and Islam. Christianity and Judaism have forms of meditation as well that are very different from eastern religions but still create relaxation and peace in the body.

Techniques are used not only for spiritual purposes, but also health purposes such as yoga meditation and secular meditation which fight against anxiety, stress and chronic physical pain.

By clearing the mind, relaxing the muscles and focusing on deep breathing, circulation, posture and concentration are improved. Yoga is deeply tied to eastern religions and its goal is to improve health and well-being and reaching Moksha which is the release from the cycle of life, death and rebirth and all the suffering attached to it.

There are many different types of meditation techniques including: Mantra, Trakata, Chakra, Vispanna, Raj Yoga, Zazen, and Nada Yoga. All of them include focusing on breathing, entering into an alternate state of consciousness and focusing on a strong sense of self. Beyond being conscious of one’s breathing, there is a wide variety of techniques that help with reaching the developmental goal that the person is aiming for which include:

"Upward" which acts to reverse the pull of gravity on the consciousness by lifting the consciousness out of the body, "Mind-centered" in which the mind is a blank slate, "Monastic" which involves exploring death’s mystery, "Observer" where you watch your thoughts and emotions as they happen from an outsideCosmic Meditation perspective, "Passive" where the mind makes no judgment similar to daydreaming or sleep, "Fantasy-based" where the person goes to an alternate place in his/her mind, "Trance" which included rhythmic chanting, "Denial" or "Dualistic" where divisions in the universe are realized and questioned, and "Religious" where one thinks about an inspiring religious leader.

Transcendental Meditation was introduced in 1957 by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, disciple of the Indian spiritual leader, Swami Brahmananda Saraswati. Yogi developed programs and initiatives to promote transcendental meditation and spent time touring the world teaching what he had learned. The technique involves sitting with one’s eyes closed for twenty minutes, twice a day and not contemplating but setting up a framework for the mind to move inwardly instead of being flooded with different ideas and feelings.

Music is a tool that is not only used for entertainment but for healing as well. Certain tones and chords can stimulate brainwaves, produce deep relaxation, increase the ability to learn, relieve stress, and even heal the body as a result of listening and feeling the music. Almost everyone has experienced deep feelings from a song a favorite artist plays or an experience at a concert.

Music can increase self-growth and fulfillment in certain areas of one’s life. Meditation music is one of many forms of music that can accomplish this. It acts to correspond with meditation practices to promote self awareness and relaxation as well as deep connection. It is also used in spas during massages to help the patient relax fully.

Manifestation Techniques… How To Meditate

Manifestation Techniques When You Are Ready For What You Want…

Looking to move to that all important next level? Are you seeking a method that can turbo charge your ability to manifest?

You’re in luck! By using my meditation you will undoubtedly manifest things more quickly and also experience more enjoyment when meditating.

Meditation is commonly mistaken for some mystic ritual orCosmic Meditation associated with monks and highly religious individuals. In my opinion, if you’re not meditating then you’re not connecting with your inner-being which means you will always have a partial detachment from the power that is natural to you.

When you focus your mind on something repetitive you automatically begin to quieten your mind which is the same as saying you are meditating. You reach a similar meditative state when you’re watching the television or listening to music. Your attention is in one place only and that is all meditation is. The difference is that when you purposely meditate, you are relieving your body and mind of many other constraints that it would normally be dealing with if you are watching television or listening to music. Once relieved of these, you can slip into a deeper state of concentration.

Find a comfortable area that you may sit quietly and will not be disturbed. It’s best to unplug the phone and turn off your mobile when you’re meditating to avoid all distractions. You can meditate in any position you like as long as your spine and head are kept straight in a vertical line.

Next, close your eyes and start to notice your breathing. Take a couple of deep, but slow, relaxing breaths in and out. Focus your mind on breathing and nothing else. When thoughts and images Techniques How To Meditatecome into your mind (and they will) just release them and do not give them your attention, focus only on your breathing. Do this for about 5 minutes.

When you feel comfortable to begin, start to visualize what it is that you want. Is it a new home? A different lifestyle? Or a new relationship? Start to think and dream about what it is that you want.

Really get into the feelings of the visualization and enjoy the moment. Live it just for a few minutes whilst you’re in your meditative state. Think only about what it is that you want and pay no attention else where. For just a few moments, believe that what you are seeing in your mind is already yours.

Don’t worry if you don’t believe it at first, just keep practising the thought and visualization until it becomes a very familiar environment to you.

Once you’ve visualized all of your desires for about 20 to 25 minutes you can then gently bring yourself out of the meditation and feel good about yourself for completing masses of work in those 25 minutes!

Repeat this meditation for the rest of your life. No seriously, why wouldn’t you want to keep doing something that has two marvellous effects …

It brings you more joy and you’re moving yourself one step closer to your desires every time you do this meditation.

This meditation is one the most powerful manifestation techniques that I’ve ever come across. As simple as it may seem, the rewards that you will reap from doing it everyday are insurmountable.
